avatar Video Spotlight – Kagatoamv – Bride of Berserk

To finish out this week’s special recommendations of weird videos, I figured I would go with something a little less odd today. That’s not to say that the combination isn’t an odd one, after all, if you have ever seen Berserk, you wouldn’t exactly think of the song used as a first choice. After all, “Bring Me My Bride” from the musical, “A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum,” is about a Gaston like character, which Guts isn’t exactly like.

It’s this allegory that really makes this both a funny and odd combination. At least if you have seen Berserk, you should find this funny. That isn’t to say that you have to, but I think I get a little more enjoyment out of this video because I have seen the show.

Either way, this is quite a funny video. Give it a view and let me know what you think.

avatar Video Spotlight – FoxJones – Snap of Doom

Well, since we’re already on a weird combination kick, why stop now? Today’s video is one that I wouldn’t call an odd combination, but an odd idea. As FoxJones admits, he came up with and edited this video while drunk, so it would be safe to assume that this is going to be an odd video. As always, it’s the presentation that really sells this video.

The video starts off quiet and unassuming. However, as the video continues the idea of The Crack of Doom coming soon gets more and more prevalent, building up to the final snap and it all goes downhill from there.

For using the same material over and over again I find the pacing of this video to be perfect. I can’t really say much more about this video without giving it all away, and you really need to watch it to truly appreciate it. So go ahead, give it a view, and let me know what you think.

avatar Video Spotlight: Alan Hepner – How Do You Get Your Thing

By now my love for Sailor Moon should be very well know. So it’s no surprise that I would fall in love with many different Sailor Moon videos. I like the show so much that I will download any AMV just because it uses Sailor Moon. Of course, that isn’t to say that I like them all. There are so many bad Sailor Moon videos, but that’s just the way things go. So what does that have to do with today’s spotlight video? Other then it being a Sailor Moon video, not a whole lot, cuz’ I LOVE this video.

At face value this video’s idea isn’t one that sounds good. Sailor Moon S the Movie with a song from School House Rock, Verb: That’s What’s Happening. Just sounds odd doesn’t it? But in the end it’s the execution that matters, and this video is executed beautifully. There a some really well timed jokes and scenes. The lip sync is quite well done as well, even if there are some points that don’t look as good.

What can I say? It’s another one of those odd combinations that just really seem to work for me. Go ahead and give it a view. Let me know what you think!

avatar Video Spotlight – The Cyrus Virus

One video that I have fond memories of actually uses a song made by a singer that I can’t stand. Miley Cyrus is not a singer I generally enjoy and before this video I couldn’t stand her song Party in the USA. And to be honest, the first time I watched Ileia’s video The Cyrus Virus I didn’t much care for it either.

It wasn’t until ACEN 2010 that I actually started liking this video. I watched it a good 20 times or so that weekend, and in the process it grew on me. One of my favorite moments with this video at the con was when we played it for the first time during the contest and one of our staff at the sound board had seen it for the first time. The video starts and it’s extremely quiet, so he starts turning the sound up and then all of a sudden it got REALLY loud. Basically, since he didn’t realize that the video was done that way, he kept thinking the board was messing up and tried to fix it. In the end it kind of made the effect more powerful on that play through.

There was a similar event at Youmacon that same year. We decided to use the video during our AMV Wars event that was being held in main programming. The sound guy in main events is a friend of mine and he loved hosting the event in main for once (normally we would be stuck in the VAT room) but he doesn’t know AMVs very well. We decided to play the video during the event as it is a fun video that we knew the attendees at the event would love, however I forgot to warn the sound guy about the video. He though t we broke the speakers. He was running around the sound booth flipping every switch and nob he could to get the sound to work. After a little while he caught on that it was the video, but man, was he flustered after it. I later found out 2nd hand from another friend that he was supposedly pissed at me for something. So I went down on Sunday when I had a break and talked to him about it. Turns out at the time he was pissed but he was just in the end a little flustered about the video, but everything was cool. It was a good laugh amongst tech staff when they recalled him jumping around the sound booth. I was given an ultimatum that I was not allowed to use videos like that again with him at the sound board unless I warned him before hand.

I’m sure there have been similar stories about this video from other cons. I’ve linked a video below of that I recorded last year at AWA of people dancing and having fun to this video. It’s just fun, even if you don’t care for Cyrus.

avatar Video Spotlight – pacotacoshell – The Sailor’s Cure To The Nostalgic Magical Girl

pacotacoshell has once again surprised me with one of his ProjectOrgEditor entries. This one is for the Semi-finals where he had to remake a video that won an award during the 2012 Viewers Choice Awards on a-m-v.org. He decided to remake Ileia‘s video The Pretty Cure for the Common Magical Girl.

I’m always a sucker for Sailor Moon amvs, and especially those with audio I can get into. Paco really did a great job of emulating the original, but yet made this his own. After all, Sailor Moon doesn’t have as much melee combat as Pretty Cure does, but that doesn’t mean Sailor Moon lacks action or even dramatic scene compositions. Paco used all of this to make a really fun video and it proves why he passed the semi-finals in the competition.

While yes, this post is about Paco’s video I’ve included Ileia’s video for your viewing pleasure as well. After all, it’s a great video as well. Heck, it almost makes me want to watch PreCure and that my friends is quite a feat!
