That’s right folks, I’m running Youma’s contest again this year. Entries have just been opened up so if you plan on submitting, or are not sure give the rules a look through and consider it. We want as many videos as we can get!

More actual TWIAMVs updates will be coming soon now that I’ve gotten the YT bug fixed.

avatar Topic Tuesday – Contest Deadlines

I just want to take a moment right now to talk about contest deadlines, more specifically, about the ones looming over my own head. I’m coming to ya’ll via blog post today because with both my work schedule and the upcomming contest deadline looming, I just really don’t have the time to also record and edit a video for ya’ll tonight. (Don’t worry, Watch Wednesday will come out as normal tomorrow, I’ve already done most of the work for that)

You know, I really wasn’t expecting this podcast series to be as time consuming as it is when I first decided to start doing it. Don’t get me wrong, I love making these and don’t plan to stop, but man are they a time sink. They eat up time planning the scripts, time recording the video and dialog, time to convert to editable formats, time to actually edit, and finally time to encode and upload the episodes, not forgetting the time to annotate and fill out the blog posts and what not. True, wordpress makes a lot of that work easier and faster, but there is still a lot of time that my PC spends on each episode that I have to dedicate CPU cycles to the cause rather then towards my own personal editing projects (yes, that’s right, I do still edit every now and again.)

So, the one con out of the year I make it a point to have something new for each year is coming up fast. That is Anime Weekend Atlanta. The deadline for their Professional contest, a contest I haven’t missed a year of since 2005, has a deadline 2 weeks away. And here I am, with not a single video finished for it yet. I love deadlines, they help me set and achieve a goal of finishing a video, but I always wind up working right until the finishing bell. Normally, I’d have a full weekend before the deadline to work on my entries but this year I’m also making a trip during the weekend before the deadline to visit my mother for her birthday. So for me the deadline is a few days sooner. That isn’t exactly a bad thing, and really I’m not complaining, but man is that deadline ever drawing nearer. It does make me want to set aside all the time I spend on this podcast in order to use it for the video(s) but that just doesn’t feel right to me.

You see, I’m the kind of guy who when I edit I edit based off of my mood or feelings. I can really only sit down and do it (at least well or right) when I’m feeling it. Let me tell you, when you use the majority of your creativity and brain power all day long at work, it doesn’t leave a whole lot for use at home on an AMV. Things are a lot better for me recently then they were a year ago, but there are still some days, and today is one of them. (host takes a long draw from the hookah, holds for a second, then exhales a large puff of smoke at the camera)

Thankfully for me and my video, tonight I can unwind in the cool air in the backyard and still get some editing work done on my laptop. I can’t place anything down in the timeline, but I can work on my scene selections at least. Get some of that time consuming and tedious scene cutting done so that when I hit the NLE tomorrow night after I have the podcast online I can start placing clips on the timeline. It’s the little victories, the conveniences like being able to remote into my editing box (no sound) and do work while also relaxing and winding down after a fun and long day at the office that makes all the difference.

Will I make the deadline? Who knows. But I sure as hell am going to do my damnedest to do it. Sleep? What’s that?

Anyone else have similar stories or issues with deadlines? I wanna hear about them. Please fill out a comment and let me know. It’s good to know others who are suffering right along with you. Now if you’ll excuse me, I’ve got some editing of my own to get to…
